Real estate mogul Kent Swig evicted from Midtown office over $450k in back rent
On June 2, Kent Swig was evicted from his Midtown office at 747 Third Avenue after allegedly falling behind on more than $450,000 in rent. A city marshal entered the space and removed the company; belongings remain inside. Employees were told they had 30 minutes to pack before the space was padlocked, a detail Swig denies.
Swig's spokesperson called the account "inaccurate," saying the company had been engaged in good-faith negotiations with the sublandlord. The spokesperson added that the sublandlord never responded to a final proposal, abruptly ended discussions and proceeded to move the firm out.
They also said the company was given 24 hours' warning and that staff were notified and given time to gather files and personal belongings. Swig comes from a long New York real estate lineage and has faced repeated financial and legal setbacks since the 2008 crisis, including a messy divorce and earlier lawsuits over unpaid rent.
