Apple TV's Cape Fear has delivered plenty of shocks in its first three episodes, from startling body-horror beats to an enigmatic teen with odd ties to the Bowden children. The series builds a slow-burn tension around Max Cady (Javier Bardem) that recalls the 1991 Scorsese adaptation, and a recent twist creates another direct link to that film.

From the premiere we learned Max was released from prison after being exonerated, and a recurring mystery has been a woman who seems to be stalking him. She appears fully covered—hood, large sunglasses and a medical mask—knocks on Anna Bowden’s motel door jingling a dog collar, then vanishes.

Later she breaks into Max’s new home and leaves a small TV, a VHS tape and an envelope; the grainy tape shows her removing her mask and singing an eerie version of the Butthole Surfers’ "Jingle of a Dog’s Collar." Max reacts by hyperventilating and smashing the TV repeatedly with a fire poker.
