Jorge R. Gutiérrez said to be developing standalone Speedy Gonzales film
Movieweb reports that, via The Hollywood Reporter, Mexican animator Jorge R. Gutiérrez is said to be officially behind a solo Speedy Gonzales movie for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Plot details are not yet known, but Gutiérrez recently teased his involvement on social media, posting a photo in a Speedy T-shirt while holding a figurine and captioning it, "Guess what movie I might be developing at Warner Brothers Pictures Animation..." Speedy Gonzales has been a Looney Tunes mainstay since the 1950s; Gabriel Iglesias last voiced the character in the "hilarious" 2021 sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy, and Fred Armison, Tim Dadabo and Dino Andrade have each played him over the years.
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation president Bill Damaschke said, "Jorge is a singular storyteller whose voice, artistry and cultural perspective make every project he touches feel both timeless and completely new. We couldn't be more excited to have him reimagining Speedy Gonzales, one of our most beloved Looney Tunes characters, for today's global audience." The announcement follows earlier attempts to give Speedy his own film: Eugenio Derbez was cast in 2016 but later said the project fell through because of "political incorrectness tags," adding, "The only ones offended are the Americans, but we [Mexicans] love Speedy Gonzales.
He's smart. He outsmarts the cats. He's a hero. He gets cheese for his people. He's fast." The news also arrives seven months ahead of the long-delayed Coyote vs.
