Jonathan David hat-trick powers Canada's historic 6-0 World Cup win
Canada recorded its first men’s World Cup victory with a 6-0 win at BC Place, a result powered by Jonathan David’s hat-trick. David opened the scoring in the first half, added another before the break and completed his treble late on, while Cyle Larin also netted his second goal in as many games.
The afternoon was marred by a serious injury to midfielder Ismael Koné after a tackle from behind by Assim Madibo, who was sent off. Homam Elamin had already been dismissed in the first half for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, leaving Qatar with nine men by the 51st minute.
Koné left on a stretcher, sitting up and waving to fans; Nathan Saliba, who replaced him, curled home a free kick in the 64th minute and held up Koné’s jersey in celebration. The win carried historical weight: it was Canada’s first at a men’s World Cup and made David the first player to score a hat-trick for a host nation since 1966.
