How two sisters built Mustard Made into an eight-figure locker brand
Becca and Jess Stern turned a fondness for vintage lockers into Mustard Made, reimagining them as practical, stylish storage for homes. They invested about $25,000 AUD in branding, samples, and a stand at a Sydney trade show, launching the business in 2018 and winning more than $200,000 AUD in orders.
Six months later Jess left her corporate job to work on the company full time. The sisters began with no product-development experience, no outside funding, and only a few overlapping work hours—Becca in Australia caring for a new baby and Jess in the UK alongside a full-time job—so there were many late-night calls and constant problem-solving.
Since then Mustard Made has expanded across three continents, grown to nearly 40 employees, and now brings in eight figures in annual revenue. They credit two key choices for that growth. First, they refused to chase short-lived trends, prioritizing timeless design instead; that approach helped build a near 30% return-customer rate and a loyal following.
