How Foundation's Mule Twist Sets Up Season 4
Apple TV's adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation has drawn attention for its ambition and for the changes it makes to the source material. While some purists have balked at those alterations, the series has reshaped elements of the story in ways its defenders argue bring greater consistency to the sprawling saga.
Season 3 reworked the Mule revelation from the books. In Asimov's original, Magnifico is revealed to have been the Mule in disguise; the show, however, makes Bayta the Mule and shows Pilou Asbæk's character as a separate figure who had been given a telepathically enforced persona.
At the same time, Magnifico is portrayed as a distinct character under mental influence rather than being the Mule himself. That shift changes what comes next. In the novels the Mule casts Bayta aside and she and her husband live out their lives in exile offstage, but the series keeps Bayta, Toran and Magnifico alive when Season 4 begins — the next season will not open with a time jump.
