Debut director Christopher M Anthony gives the boxing film a new spin in Heavyweight, charting in real time the behind-the-scenes buildup to a title fight. Jordan Bolger plays “Diamond” Derek Douglas, who is drafted in on a wildcard to face the current champion. The film’s momentum is jolted when Derek’s former training partner Cain (Osy Ikhile) brings insider knowledge to the other side.

Anthony confines Derek to the locker room for the film’s duration; Derek comes to suspect his stalwart trainer Adam (Nicholas Pinnock) of being in cahoots with Cain, repeatedly phones his brother and even punches a mirror in frustration, forcing Adam to conceal an injured hand as camera crews, celebrities and promoter Freddie (Jason Isaacs) hover.

Anthony’s real-time, restless camera work keeps him in sync with the interdependent dynamics between fighter and coach, showing Derek alternately lashing out and looking to Adam for reassurance. Bolger and Pinnock are singled out for incisive work fleshing out those psychological shifts, and Bolger is noted as looking physically plausible in the role.

The film occasionally shows the limits of a one-location drama, with some story beats labouring for momentum and much backstory delivered verbally; the review also questions whether Team Douglas would realistically allow Cain so much access.
