A match brimming with star power needed an unlikely spark, and Norway's backup right back Marcus Pedersen provided it after a tense opening 42 minutes. Pedersen, on for the injured Julian Ryerson, pounced on a poor backpass from Kalidou Koulibaly to finish past a stranded Edouard Mendy and give Norway a 1-0 lead at the New York/New Jersey Stadium.

After the break Erling Haaland took charge. A perfect through ball from Martin Ødegaard set up a 47th-minute finish to make it 2-0, only for Senegal to respond six minutes later when Sadio Mané teed up Ismaila Sarr to cut the deficit. Haaland restored the two-goal cushion by tapping in from a low cross after another failure to clear, but Sarr struck again two minutes into nine minutes of stoppage time to make it 3-2 and spark a late scare.

Opta Sports notes Haaland is just the sixth player in World Cup history to score multiple goals in each of his first two tournament appearances.
