Guillermo Ochoa chasing record sixth World Cup, eyes one final chapter
Guillermo Ochoa is pursuing what no player has yet achieved: a place at a sixth World Cup. Speaking on the set of Michelob ULTRA’s FIFA World Cup commercial, he admitted, “It’s not an easy record to break,” and said he is working hard and feeling close to realising the dream.
His rise began long before the headband and the tournament-defining saves. In June 2007, in Puerto Ordaz, a 21-year-old Ochoa threw himself in front of Brazilian attackers as Mexico won 2-0 in the Copa America, a night that later looked like the first clear sign of a player who would refuse to fade.
Ochoa’s decision to leave Mexico took him across Europe — France, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Portugal — through relegation battles and difficult spells such as at Malaga under Javi Gracia. Those years were less about trophies and more about resilience. “I’m always trying to be fit,” he said.
