GenAI Used in Development of Tomb Raider Remake, Steam Page Reveals
Crystal Dynamics unveiled a new trailer for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis during PlayStation’s State of Play, showcasing an Unreal Engine 5 overhaul. The game’s Steam page, however, includes a disclosure saying generative AI tools were used early in development.
The disclosure reads: "AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content. Any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team." That use of genAI follows wider discussion at the parent company level: Phil Rogers, CEO of Embracer Group, called genAI a "powerful technology" for "driving efficiency." Crystal Dynamics has also completed several rounds of layoffs, three last year and one earlier in 2026, amid a larger Embracer restructuring after its $2 billion deal with the Savvy Games Group—reported to be tied to the Saudi Arabia Private Investment Fund—fell through in 2023.
