Game of Thrones' video games have mostly been mediocre — with one exception
From 2011 to 2019 HBO’s adaptation was a cultural centerpiece, but its final season changed how the series is seen with unsatisfying character resolutions, rushed plotlines and questionable writing decisions. HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery have kept the franchise alive with spinoffs House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, though their popularity is a fraction of the original show.
Despite the property’s reach, it has produced few standout games. Early attempts included the 2011 strategy A Game of Thrones: Genesis, which holds a 53 on Metacritic, and a 2012 RPG that also fared poorly. Telltale’s episodic Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series ran from December 2014 to November 2015 and earned an OK reception, but its appeal depends on how much players like Telltale’s choice-driven format and the assumption that you already know the TV show.
Numerous other titles followed: browser MMO Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming and several mobile releases such as Game of Thrones Ascent, Conquest and Beyond the Wall.
