Five things we learned about Splatoon Raiders
Splatoon Raiders is the series’ first single-player spin-off and positions the player as a scrappy mechanic who selects a hairstyle and fends off salmonids. Familiar faces like Big Man, Shiver, and Frye return, and one assists via a notably stubby-looking mech.
Nintendo cleared up a number of details during the June 9 Direct and Treehouse, with a dedicated Raiders Direct set for June 30 and the game due July 23. The game moves away from strictly linear single-player levels toward more open-ended raids. Players will search islands for treasure, weapons, and Spirhalite Shards, and can surf between islands.
Between missions you’ll return to the Hideout Ship—a sketchy-looking headquarters where Deep Cut hangs out, you tinker with gear, buy upgrades, plan raids, and eventually build new ship parts. As a mechanic you craft gadgets that are independent of your main weapons, so you can mix and match freely.
