On an annual family beach vacation in Mexico — where the beaches were beautiful and meals were included — a day of unexplained meltdowns left me thinking, "This was supposed to be a vacation." I realized I hadn't enjoyed trips as much when my children were younger because I was consumed with packing, planning, and managing every detail instead of considering what the vacation meant for all of us.

The logistics were exhausting: packing, schedules, snacks, gear, and the constant emotional work of watching the kids to keep them safe. There was also pressure to make each trip feel magical for young children filled with wonder, which turned travel into parenting in a different location and left little time for downtime or a simple drink at the end of the day.

Things shifted around age 10. On one trip my daughter asked to explore a bit on her own; I hesitated but let her, and she returned beaming with a new sense of independence.
