Fabien Frankel says fans should expect even worse for Ser Criston in the new season, and admitted he had hoped viewers would once again root for the character. "Dude. I know, so was I. It was a bit of a turn that I didn’t expect, but you know the writers want to keep me unlikable, man," he said.

"They want to keep my career derailed." Olivia Cooke has said Criston showed "different sides" in Season 2, but Frankel explained why those moments never reached the screen: "They got cut. Anytime we try to bring a little bit of humanity to the thing, Ryan [Condal] and Sara [Hess] just want me f***ing really down and dumped," he quipped.

It remains unclear whether the show will follow Criston’s ultimate fate from Fire & Blood, and George R.R. Martin has been vocal about deviations between the book and the series, especially Prince Maelor’s absence in Season 1. "They did not want to deal with casting another child, especially a two-year old toddler," Martin wrote in a now-deleted blog post.
