The Boys concluded with Season 5's eighth episode, and the series finale proved divisive. While it included several expected deaths, many viewers felt the final confrontation lacked the spectacle teased earlier and did not live up to the promised "scorched earth" showdown between Billy Butcher and Homelander.

Creator Eric Kripke acknowledged the criticism and offered an apology to fans who felt let down. He said he "sees everything" online: "I'm not healthy in that I'm like, 'Oh, I never look.' I see it all." Kripke added that his job is to provoke emotion—"My job is to get an emotional reaction, not necessarily to dictate what that emotional reaction is"—and that he was sorry if he disappointed viewers, while noting the show has "way north of 60 million viewers," making the online backlash a small fraction of the audience.

The finale depicted the deaths of Billy Butcher, Homelander, The Deep, O Father and Butcher's dog, Terror, following earlier losses such as Firecracker and A-Train.
