Eraser at 30: Chuck Russell on Pushing Action and Grounding Schwarzenegger
Thirty years on, Eraser still reads like a film made in the 1990s: Arnold Schwarzenegger at the height of his star power, dropped into a world of corporate conspiracy, witness protection, alligators, parachutes and sci‑fi weapons that wouldn’t look out of place in a video game.
Director Chuck Russell helmed the picture with precision, pushing the action as far as it could go while aiming for a more grounded turn from Schwarzenegger. He also revealed that the movie’s sci‑fi railguns were more real than you might think. Russell reflected on working with Schwarzenegger at a fascinating point in his career and surrounding him with actors such as James Caan, Vanessa Williams and James Coburn, all while hunting the right balance between spectacle and story before CGI took over.
