That doomed Deus Ex remaster should be rebooted with Nightdive
Nightdive’s first trailer for Thief: The Dark Project Remastered leans into a “how you remember it” approach, touching up medieval environments and reworking the game’s famously low‑poly NPCs. The studio’s prior System Shock 2 remaster shows a clear grasp of Looking Glass’ Dark Engine, and the Thief reveal also promises Nightdive’s usual DVD‑style extras: art, preserved prototypes, and development footage.
By contrast, Aspyr’s initial look at Deus Ex Remastered prompted skepticism for a confusing visual overhaul that reads like a half‑generation Xbox upgrade, borrowing bloom and normal‑map effects reminiscent of Invisible War. Aspyr presents the project as “the definitive version of Ion Storm’s legendary cyberpunk immersive sim,” but the presentation hasn’t convinced longtime fans.
There’s also no confirmation yet on mod compatibility, though Aspyr has a decent record with its Steam ports of classic Star Wars titles and its Neverwinter Nights 2 remaster.
