Doctor Who comeback could proceed without the Doctor
It has been just over a year since Ncuti Gatwa made his final appearance as Doctor Who's lead, and the BBC is still looking for a new main actor. Gatwa's exit also marked the end of the show's Disney/BBC collaboration, and while the BBC announced new episodes would be produced without Disney and scheduled a Christmas special for December 2026, a behind-the-scenes casting struggle now threatens those plans.
One clear workaround is to proceed without the Doctor, at least initially. The Whoniverse already contains successful examples where the Doctor is secondary or absent: spin-offs such as Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Class and Disney's The War Between the Land and the Sea, plus parent-show episodes like "Blink," "Turn Left," and "73 Yards" all tell compelling stories without relying on the central Time Lord.
Stories without the Doctor tend to feel darker and more human, with messier, imperfect solutions to crises.
