Gavin, 70, from Stroud is retired and a town councillor who previously worked as an industrial chemist, a business systems analyst and a debt specialist for Citizens Advice. He votes Lib Dem, Green and Labour tactically to keep the Tories out and, after seeing the petrochemical industry’s practices when he graduated, now supports Just Stop Oil.

Tony, 60, from Gloucestershire is a psychotherapist and company director in health and social care; he votes Lib Dem and keeps a pig called Colin, who when too big “married” a Toulouse goose named Dolores. They ate at The White Hart in Winchcombe. Tony said they got on well and that recent jaw surgery meant he couldn’t chew, but his son, the restaurant’s head chef, adapted dishes to be soft.

Tony drank a local IPA and had liver parfait, chicken and leek pie with colcannon and crushed peas, and sorbet. Gavin chose parfait, baked hake, cider and scoops of pistachio and mango sorbet. Views diverged on the monarchy and pensions.
