Destiny 2 draws biggest crowd in years as final update launches
Bungie's Monument of Triumph update, a final sendoff that ends active development on Destiny 2, launched on June 9. Players returned in numbers not seen since the Final Shape expansion: SteamDB recorded a concurrent Steam peak of 165,856 at the time of writing, up about 9,000 from when the writer started, with typical queue issues accompanying the surge.
This makes Monument of Triumph the most active update since summer 2024, when player counts nearly matched the all-time peak of 316,750. The boost is striking after a difficult 2026, when Destiny 2 averaged well under 20,000 concurrent Steam players and sat at roughly 12,851 on May 4.
Monument of Triumph bundles balance changes, updated loot, new abilities, reprised activities and a festive farewell, and those additions clearly resonated with the community. Still, the comeback is bittersweet. Servers will remain online and technical hotfixes may arrive, but there will be no further updates beyond minor fixes.
