Global music streaming service Deezer announced the launch of Remix Lab, which lets fans remix songs with the consent of the original artists and rights holders. The company says artists are paid for every stream of these remixed tracks. Remix Lab appears in the app on select artists’ pages.

Deezer’s in-app tools let users adjust tempo, add reverb or make more elaborate transformations such as changes to musical genre and style, head of product Pierre Trochu wrote in a blog post. The approach contrasts with competitors that rely on AI: YouTube offers AI remix tools and Spotify has teamed up with Universal Music Group for AI-generated covers and remixes.

Critics argue that AI-driven content could overshadow human artists and make it harder for them to gain traction. Deezer has taken a firm stance against AI, recently launching a tool that analyzes playlists from services such as Spotify and Apple Music to detect AI-generated tracks.
