Declan Rice revealed he has been managing nerve pain in his hamstring since the Christmas period while coping with a packed season for club and country. He played through discomfort in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia, providing an assist for Harry Kane before being substituted in the 72nd minute and seen limping as he left the field.

Rice described the issue as a neural pain he had been managing “from after Christmas with Arsenal for a very long time,” saying the substitution was a precaution. “In the end, that last 20 minutes is probably where you pick up the most... but that last 20 is where you really feel your body going for it, and I think it was a smart decision,” he told ITV Sport.

The midfielder’s condition came after a gruelling campaign in which he played 55 matches for Arsenal, helping the club win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final.
