Collider recommends the German-language Netflix series Dark as a darker, more concise sci-fi alternative to Stranger Things.

Set in the town of Winden, Dark follows Jonas (Louis Hofmann) as he uncovers a time loop after his father’s suicide. One night, when Jonas and his friends investigate the Winden Caves, a boy named Mikkel (Daan Lennard Liebrenz) vanishes and is later revealed to have been transported to the 1980s, triggering a butterfly effect that pulls citizens from three different decades into the mystery. The series leans more heavily into science fiction than the supernatural elements of Hawkins, and addresses mature themes such as adultery, suicide, and murder.

Dark ran from 2017 to 2020 over three seasons and, according to the piece, concluded on its own terms with planned story arcs that gave the show a clear beginning, middle and end. The series was created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, with Friese serving as showrunner and Odar directing; writers credited include Marc O. Seng, Martin Behnke and Ronny Schalk.
