Alex, 76, and Beth, 75, describe an active sexual relationship in later life and say “Nobody has enjoyed a night at the Premier Inn Milton Keynes more than we have.”

They met online 20 years ago, emailed for a while, and after their first in-person meeting had sex within days. In the early years they had sex every day; now it is perhaps a couple of times a month, but they emphasise the continued joy of being intimate together.

As they have aged they have adjusted their sex life: they do much less penetrative sex, Alex uses chemical assistance to maintain erections, and they sometimes shop together for Beth’s preferred lubricant. They also describe public affection such as letting their hands wander under restaurant tables or on the Tube escalator, and say few people notice.

Open communication is central to their relationship: they talk about erectile dysfunction and vaginal dryness, masturbate together, and have oral sex; Beth says they have probably had intercourse about 10 times in two decades but she has never been more fulfilled. They conclude that, if partners can openly communicate, sex can get better with age.
