Collector who owns Whoopi Goldberg’s teapot buys Diane Keaton’s nail clippers
Gustavo Egusquiza, a travel journalist and consultant from Bilbao, knew as soon as he opened the Bonhams catalogue that he wanted Diane Keaton’s nail clippers. "I saw them, and I knew I wanted them," he says. The clippers came in a curated box with dozens of hair pins and safety pins; Egusquiza chose the item because it felt intimate — "it will have her fingerprints on it." The online auction in New York quickly passed its $200 estimate and moved beyond $600.
"Then I had a bit of doubt, I really didn’t expect it to get that high," he says, but he kept bidding and lot 2182 finally cost him $960 (£715) including the buyer’s premium. He is waiting for the box to be shipped from New York to Bilbao. Egusquiza says he will not use the clippers or pins; the box will go on display in his office.
His collection already includes a white ceramic teapot from Whoopi Goldberg, an Eagle of the Sioux from Larry King and a signed Chris Levine portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
