Cape Fear review: Javier Bardem terrifies in Apple TV reboot
Apple TV’s Cape Fear reimagines the story that inspired the 1991 film and the 1962 original, with creator Nick Antosca delivering a modern, episodic retelling. The series is not a direct remake but pays clear homage, with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg credited among its executive producers and a cast led by Javier Bardem, Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson.
Bardem plays Max Cady, who sets out to terrorize prosecutor Tom (Wilson) and former defense lawyer Anna (Adams), now married and implied to have played a role in his imprisonment. The Bowdens are now a nuclear family with two children — including a son, Zack (Joe Anders) — which raises the stakes and gives the story new pressures; interactions with daughter Natalie (Lily Collias) are less overtly disturbing than in the 1991 film, though the series echoes that film in unsettling ways.
Bardem’s Max is colder and more methodical than earlier portrayals, often blurring the line between victim and manipulator in a performance that leans into psychological menace and gaslighting.
