Cameron says Avatar 4 and 5 need cheaper production to proceed
Gamesradar reports James Cameron said he needs to find a cheaper way to make future Avatar films if Avatar 4 and 5 are to proceed.
He told Taiwanese outlet TVBS News the movie industry is depressed, that Avatar 3 cost a lot of money, and that the series must do well financially to continue. Avatar 3 has earned $1.2 billion, still behind the original Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion); the latter remains the third highest-grossing film after Avengers: Endgame.
Cameron also name-dropped Michelle Yeoh as a possible cast member who would play a performance-capture Na’vi named Paktu’eylat in both 4 and 5 if the films go ahead. Avatar 4 is scheduled for December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 for December 19, 2031, and the report says it would be some time before such additions appear on screen.
