Everyone who has played Destiny remembers a moment from those early days — for many it was the first Gjallarhorn, a rocket launcher that dominated Year One. Destiny launched in September 2014 and within days players hit the level cap of 20, leaving a game that felt hollow to many; the promise of pursuing Light required replaying missions that already felt exhausted.

With little new content, Bungie leaned on punishing difficulty and a stingy random loot system. The Nightfall Strike offered great rewards but could place enemies above your level and punish full-team wipes, driving players to exploit tactics like hiding under a platform with Ice Breaker or farming the infamous loot cave until Bungie patched those workarounds.

The Vault of Glass, released shortly after the base game, changed the conversation.
