Baldur's Gate 2 remake reportedly in development
PC Gamer cites an anonymous source claiming Wizards of the Coast is developing a remake of Baldur's Gate 2: Shadow of Amn rather than producing a sequel to Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3. The same source says former BioWare developer and Baldur's Gate 2 co‑lead designer Kevin Martens is involved, and the project may also include a remake of the original Baldur's Gate.
What such a remake would entail is unclear. Both games already received Beamdog's popular Enhanced Editions, which update interfaces, fix bugs and add companions and quests. A full remake could instead introduce new visuals, either rendered in 3D or in a 2D‑HD style.
The first two Baldur's Gate games and the Throne of Bhaal expansion were built on BioWare's Infinity Engine, using an isometric perspective that simulated 3D with pre‑rendered 2D scrolling backgrounds and sprite‑based characters. That distinct look poses a challenge when imagining a modern graphical overhaul.
