Collider reports that James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash has passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, reaching nearly $1.1 billion and doubling the worldwide gross of Jason Statham's 2018 sci‑fi film The Meg.

The film hit the milestone despite mixed reviews and has overtaken past hits such as The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, and Joker, the report said. The Meg, based on novels by Steve Alten and directed by Jon Turteltaub, was produced on a reported budget of up to $178 million and grossed over $500 million globally, including about $145 million domestically and $153 million from China; its sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, later grossed nearly $400 million worldwide.

Avatar 3 was produced on a reported budget of $400 million and is aiming to become Cameron's fourth consecutive film to pass $2 billion. Its Rotten Tomatoes score stands at 66%, the lowest of the series, while the first Avatar has a $2.9 billion lifetime gross and an 80% RT score and Avatar: The Way of Water has a $2.3 billion gross and a 76% RT score. The film is playing in theaters.
