Amazon Cancels Long‑Anticipated Stargate Reboot
Variety reported earlier this week that Amazon has axed the long‑anticipated Stargate reboot by Martin Gero, despite a "full series" order placed in November.
The franchise began on the big screen with Roland Emmerich's 1994 Stargate and later found new life on television with Stargate SG‑1, which launched a multi‑series empire that ran for nearly 15 years.
The continuation had attracted several franchise veterans: Gero as showrunner, Emmerich and Dean Devlin as executive producers, and Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi credited as consulting producers. Joe Flanigan was also invited to the writers' room, a move that encouraged fans about how the new series might relate to its predecessors.
Amazon aborted the project, citing concerns that Gero's take would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise's already dedicated fanbase. The decision prompted criticism from fans and longtime franchise figures who had been eager for a return.
