A24's Elden Ring Film Could Outdo The Lord of the Rings
When it comes to epic fantasy stories, it doesn't get bigger or better than The Lord of the Rings. J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy has thrilled readers for over 70 years and Peter Jackson's films for more than 20, but the franchise has struggled to recapture that peak; The Hobbit trilogy stretched itself thin and The Rings of Power has proved divisive, while new projects set between the original trilogy's events risk feeling like strip‑mining the past.
Elden Ring, a 2022 game from FromSoftware, offers a similarly vast, layered world. FromSoftware's reputation for difficult, moody, lore‑dense games and Hidetaka Miyazaki's creative direction helped make Elden Ring their masterpiece. Players encounter god‑like figures such as Godrick the Grafted, Starscourge Radahn and Malenia, and George R.R.
Martin assisted in fleshing out the mythology, leaving a dense backstory that works as a strong jumping‑off point for a film. A24 and Alex Garland look well suited to that task.
