1992 co-headlining stadium tour unraveled
The summer of 1992 brought a crowded tour calendar, with U2, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, The Black Crowes and others on the road, and the first Lollapalooza debuting. The biggest summer outing, however, was a 26-date co-headlining stadium tour pairing Metallica—flying high on The Black Album—with Guns n' Roses, who were promoting Use Your Illusion I and II.
Faith No More opened each night, and the tour began at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., on July 17, 1992. Tension built quickly. Metallica ran tight, punctual sets; Guns n' Roses were unpredictable and notorious for late starts, a problem that had carried over from a 1991 show in Philadelphia when the band did not take the stage until after midnight.
